Glory and Memory: Remembering the Franco-Prussian War in French Visual Culture, 1900-2014
Joshua Smith will travel to Paris and Metz to examine how memories of the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871) and their underlying cultural politics manifested in France throughout the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. His research will explore those manifestations in several areas: the construction of monuments, World War I posters, films, and recent museum displays.
