It Takes a Village: Gender, Nationalism, and Rural Imagination in Bohemian Village Operas
My dissertation examines the Czech musical genre known as village opera at the turn of the twentieth century. I will go to Prague and perform necessary archival research in order to determine the ways in which these operas engaged constructions of gender and ruralness in helping to create and propagate their nationalist message. This dissertation fills a large gap in musicology by examining these concepts together in the context of Czech opera.
