"Equal but not the Same": Debates and Policies on Gender Equality in East and West Germany, 1945-1965

Gleichberechtigung, or "the equality of men and women," was highly controversial in East and West Germany after 1945. Politicians, society, and the media in both German states disputed how to legally define and implement "gender equality" in the 1950s and 1960s. I interpret these discussions as conflicts over gendered definitions of citizenship rights in the postwar Germanys that gained increasing significance in the Cold War.
