Home from the Djebel: Veterans of the Algerian War in French Society, 1956-1974.
French veterans of the Algerian War formed a large, active segment of French society, yet scholars have ignored their postwar experiences. Not recognized by the state until 1974, veterans still effected societal changes through civic engagement. Through oral history and archival research in France, I will analyze veterans' return experience, in the private sphere, politics, and civil society. My study recasts our understanding of modern French history.
