Oracles, Jews, Bandits, Slaves: The Early Modern Mediterranean At Play in the Theater of Giovan Battista Andreini

Tessa C. Gurney will travel to Italy to conduct archival research on the perception of the Mediterranean 'Other' in Early Modern Italy. Based at the State Archives in Florence and Venice, she will be examining sixteenth and seventeenth century manuscripts and personal correspondence. Additionally, as an accompaniment to her archival research, she will be completing the first English translation of a seventeenth century Italian comedy, Lo Schiavetto (The Little Slave).
